The following study was conducted to evaluate the effect of two continuous ramp test protocols on the post exercise core temperature response. Six subjects completed 2 incremental cycle ergometer VO2maz exercise trals in a temperature controlled chamber at 29℃ ambient temperature. Work loda was increased by either 20 or 40 W each two minutes until exhaustion. Exercise was followed by 60 min of resting recovery. Esophagel temperatures were similar at the start of each exercise bout (i.e., 36.81 and 36.90℃ for 20 and 40 W respectively). The 20 W maximal ramp test resulted in a significantly greater end-exercise esphageal temperature and exercise duration (i.e., 38.58℃ and 25.4 min) as compared to 40 W (i.e., 38.19℃ and 16.2 min) (p<0.05). However, both the esophageal temperature threshold for cutaneous vasodilation (37.06 and 37.24℃ for 20 and 40 W respectively and sweating (36.90 and 37.23℃ for 20 and 40 W respectively) were significantly greater for the 40 W continuous ramp test as compared to the 20 W ramp test (p<0.05). In both cases, post-exercise esophageal temperature retumed to baseline resting values within -48min. These data demonstrate that incremental maximal exercise does not result in a sustained post-exercise elevation in esophageal temperature comparable to submaximal steady state exercise.
