Body composition and hematological proflts of 20 underweight adolescent females were examined. Of the 20 subjects, 10 were serious distance runners (mean age 16.3 years) and the otherswere relatively sedentary college students (18 years of age). The evaluation included measuremantes of body compositon, [?] cycle and hematologic charanterstics. The data revcaled that the scdentary females with a low BMI had physique and dinernsinal characteristics similar to those of the distance runners. The majour finding of the present study was that the distance runners kad less body fat and more kean body weight than the sedentary ones, although the body weights of the tow groups did not differ singiciantly. The sample group of femake runners had a relatively late menarche age and a hith incidence of oligomenorrhea. They also had reduced estrigea (e2) concentrations with no significant differences in the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-simmulating hormone (FSH) compared with the sedcntary group. Whereas the henatilogic characterisics of these underweight females within normal linits, ineasurement of serum irons levels showed that some of the scdcatary females may have been at risk for iron deficiency anemia. The body composison and hesutological profiles for the distance runner regarded as "underfat" were significantly differnt from those of the sedentay females regarded as "underweight". Consequendy, the notion of a small frane is incorrect.
