Seawater intrusion into confined aquifers in the estuaries of the Naka and Kiki Rivers were analyzed using two models; a fresh-salt water interface model and a hydrodynamic dispersion model. By applying the Galerkin finite-element method to approximate equations, the transient positions of the movable fresh-salt water interface and the groundwater level could be computed. Also, by applying a similar method to basic equations describing steady dispersion in three dimensions, the salt concentration and velocity field could be computed. Both models reproduce fairly well the field data for the areal distributions of salt concentrations in aquifers of the two estuaries.
