An attempt was made to cultivate marine yeasts on hydrolysate produced by saccharification of cellulosic wastes, by the action of cellulases. The cellulases were produced in a 10 l laboratory fermentor with 1% treated rice straw as substrate. A syrup of about 5% glucose could be obtained with a high enzyme concentration in 2.5 days. The hydrolysate proved to be suitable substrate for the production of microbial biomass, as 5 to 6 g/l of dry yeast cell mass was obtained in 48 hr. The protein content of which ranged from 38 to 48%.
