Acetic acid, propionic acid and n-butyric acid in wastewater inhibited the uptake of inorganic phosphate into activated sludge. The inhibition occurred around a concentration of 1×10<-3> M to 1×10<-5> M of each organic acid, and increased with an increase in the concentration of the organic acids. β-Alanine brought about a 45% recovery of the decrease of phosphate uptake caused by addition of propionin acid (1×10<-4> M). When the activated suldge was incubated in a medium containing glucose and the organic acids, the glucose was metabolized first, the acetic acid second, and the propionic acid and n-butric acid last. Acetic acid, propionic acid and n-butyric acid decreased the ATP concentration in activated sludge. Based on decreases in phosphate uptake and ATP concentration, a possible inhibition of the active transport system in microorganisms is discussed.
