Fundamental characteristics of the behavior of a buried pipeline during an earthquake were studied with a model of a beam on an elastic foundation to which sinusoidal ground motion was applied. Comparison of our simulated data with data mobtained from field observations of the effects of earthquakes on pipelines and tunnels proved that our model analysis could predict accurately the behavior of a buried pipeline in response to actual earthquakes. This model should prove an effective tool for deciding what type of ground motion is to be studied in order to determine the principal causes of pipeline damage during an earthquake.
