A successful taking of refuge from a large-scale landslide in Nishiyoshino Village in August 1982 is reviewed on the basis of the testimony of the inhabitants, the historical record, post-slide investigations and air-photo analysis. Comparison of the results with recent experiences of large-scale landslides in Japan reveals the conditions under which the evacuation is successful and the principal factors of the prediction of large-scale landslides involved. It is concluded that a good combination of longterm, medium-term and imminent approaches to prediction are necessary.
