• Yeast cells produce H_2O_2 in the presence of exogenous menadione, and the extracellular concentration of H_2O_2 produced is proportional to the viable cell number or cell activity. Chemiluminesent assay of menadione-catalyzed H_2O_2 production requires only a few minutes, and is useful for rapid determination of the viability of yeast cells.
