The present study describes scale-up of Porphyridium cruentum cultures in diffrent types of enclosed bioreactors. Special consideration for the purpose was the comparative performance of these photobioreactors relevant to growth and polysaccharide production, which have a significance in the commerial exploitation of the microalga. The custom-built flat-sided photobioreactor with higher exposed surface area to volume ratio was found to be the best system for the cultivation of P. cruentum.
