Lignin peroxidase production by a brown-rot fungus Polyporus ostreiformis BU has investigated in stationary culture conditions. A maximum of 50 n kat・l^<-1> enzyme activity of the culture filtrate was obtained on the 6th d of incubation of the organism in a synthetic liquid medium. The efficiency of the production was compared with a strain of the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium NCIM 1197 which yielded 480 n kat・l^<-1> activity under identical conditions. Enhanced enzyme activities were recorded following the addition of varatyl (0.4-2.0 mM) or benzyl (0.4-1.0 mM) alcohols to the medium after 36 h of incubation.
