Hydrogen Photoproduction and Denitrification by Photpsynthetic Bacteria Isolated from Lake Nakaumi and Its Vicinity

Photosynthetic bacteria were isolated from Lake Nakaumi and its vincinity, and investigated for their hydrogen production and denitrification abilities. Sixty-three strains isolated from the lake were identified as Rhodobacter sphaeroides, and they all had hydrogen-producing ability. Twenty of these strains had higher ability in both hydrogen production and denitrification. Their average rates were 70.7 μl H_2h・mg cells (dry weight) and 31.4μl N_2/h・mg cells (dry weight), respectively. Eighteen strains isolated from vicinal fresh water environments were identified as Rhodopseudomonas palustris, and had a lower hydrogen-producing ability with no denitrification ability. The maximum rates of hydrogen production and denitrification of the strains from the lake were 163.3 μl H_2/h・mg cells (dry weight) and 79.1μl N_2/h・mg cells (dry weight), respectively.
