End Products and Molar Growth Yield of Clostridium fallax Isolated from an Anaerobic Digester

Clostridium fallax YK-1 produced acetate, butyrate, lactate, Co_2 and H_2 from glucose. Fermentation by this strain in batch culture was greatly affected by the initial concentraion of glucose in the medium. When the glucose concentration was limited, acetate, butyrate and lactate were produced almost in parallel, with the lactate produced being consumed after glucose in the medium was exhausted. When the glucose concentration in the medium was in excess, almost only lactate was produced after the amounts of acetate and butyrate produced reached certain maximum concentrations. The molar growth yield of this strain decreased in accordance with the increase of the initial glucose concentration in the medium, and the molar yields of products also significantly changed depending on the initial glucose concentration.
