Rhizopus oligosporus was grown in membrane filter culture as a model solid-state fermentation system allowing direct determination of biomass. An empirical equation was developed to describe the glucoamylase activity in the substrate, which was then used to predict the growth rate. Apart from an early discrepancy, the growth rate was reasonable correlated with glucoamylase activity. The logistic growth model was also applied to the data.
