Using γ-alumina a 3.5 fold increase of COD loading in the methane fermentation of Greek vinasse was achieved, as compared with other anaerobic digestion processes. Loadings of 28 g・l^<-1>・d^<-1> and 77 g・l^<-1>・d^<-1> for vinasse and for glucose medium respectively were obtained. The generation of large amounts of volatile fatty acids (VFA), biogas production at high VFA concentrations and a drastic drop in the time needed for the start-up were observed.
