A membrane gas sensor was used for the analysis of on-line volatile compounds in the fermentor headspace. This sensor had excellent linearity, from 0.1 to more than 120 g/l for ethanol and from 5 mg/l to more than 1 g/l for acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate. Moreover, the output signal was not affected by aeration and the sensor was able to monitor dynamic processes. A comparative criteria chart to choose the membrane positioning is proposed.
