The attenuation of peak ground motion on rock sites is not available for the January 17,1995 Hyogoken-nambu earthquake. We therefore calculated the theoretical distribution of the maximum velocity and acceleration at the base rock level in the region near the earthquake source, then introduce the amplification factor of the surface ground in order to calculate the peak velocity on the ground surface. Estimated peak velocities were compared with the recorded values, and the amplification factors of the area concerned were investigated.
