• Slope failures are frequent in the residual soils of Japan because of unusual soil characteristics that are not yet well understood exist. I have established a soil classification system based mainly on the physical properties of a soil. After examining the relation of soil properties to slope failure patterns, I concluded that the type of slope failure is closely related to the physical properties of the soil profile.
