Office activities are essentially cooperative, and are carried out through the collaboration of a group of office workers in an organizational context. This cooperative and distributed nature of office work often makes it difficult to keep track of the progress and the current status of the entire job. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a design methodology for asynchronous groupware that can keep track of the cooperative work flow among a geographically distributed group of office workers. First, an office procedure model, OM-1 (Office Model One), is proposed as a means of representing knowledge of well-structured cooperative work. Then, a design methodology for asynchronous groupware is presented. This groupware interprets the office procedure description and controls the task flow among people, using a semi-structured message technique. Through the experimental use of a prototype implemented in the UNIX environment, it was confirmed that (1) this design methodology is applicable to a wide range of form-driven tasks, (2) users can easily find out the current status and execution history of each task in progress, and (3) users can easily adjust the groupware by editing the model description according to changes in office procedures.
