One typical application of the Fujitsu FACOM VP supercomputer is structural analysis using the Finite Element Method (FEM). However, a problem that comes up when using supercomputers for analyzing large-scale models is that a large matrix is generated. This large matrix often causes a bottleneck in fi1e I/O processing. In turn, this bottleneck prevents the supercomputer from being efficiently used. We tried the CG (iterative) method instead of Cholesky's method which is normally used in FEM programs. We used data similar to the actual data to make verification of the solution easier. Although only one model was tested, we were able to show that the CG method can be widely used and that it increases the efficiency of supercomputer processing. As our research continues, we plan to closely examine utilization of the CG method in a broad area of applications and to improve the preprocessing and postprocessing methods necessary for structural analysis.
