Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to meet you and to present some current ideas on software engineering and programming. What I will talk about today is the result of many years of work, thinking and discussions. Many people have helped me in formulating my ideas. I am in pardicular grateful to my colleagues in the IFIP working Groups 2.2 and 2.3. Since I believe in the formal specification of software, I had better give you a specification of the talk. There will basically be five parts: (1)First, an introductory general part (sects.1, 2, 3) in which I wish to make a distinction between information technology, on the one hand, and informatics as a more broader concept, on the other hand. (2)Then (sect.4) I will narrow the topic to that of making a distinction between software engineering and programming. (3)After a few remarks about this distinction, i will go into a somewhat technical discourse or somewhat technical discussion (sect.5). (4)On the basis of these three things, the distinction between information technology and informatics, the distinction between software engineering and programming, and the somewhat technical example, I will make a number of conclusions (sect.6).
