Formation of Scientific Information System and Its Implication to Informatics

The purpose of this paper is to give a general introduction to the research activities of the Special Research Project (SRP), "Formation Process of Information System and Organization of Scientific Information", being sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture of the Japanese Government, and then to explain their implications to the development of informatics in the coming days. In Section 2, we shall start with a description of research organizations, and then we proceed in Section 3 to an introduction of research achievements which have been acquired up to the present time. These two sections aim to give an objective description of the items concerned on the basis of several official reports given by the Coordinating Committee associated with SRP and official summary reports on research activities, each of which was written by the head of each Individual Research Unit (IRU). On the other hand, Sections 4 and 5 reflect the subjective views of the present author regarding research directions and evaluations of research achievements which have been established by SRP as a whole. Section 6 is devoted to an illustration of the implications of SRP to the development of informatics. The conclusion given in Section 7 points out the remaining work to be done by Japanese scientists in the coming days in order to realize a sound scientific information system in Japan in intimate cooperation with any worldwide scientific information system.
