Various fermentation systems were examined to determine a system capable of in vitro production of somatic alfalfa embryos. A hanging stir bar fermentor (HSBF) operated with controlled dissolved oxygen concentrations of 13.5 to 50% was found to be suitable for the cultivation of somatic alfalfa embryos. The results confirm the possibility of producing a large quantity of somatic embryos by fermentation technology for the development of artificial alfalfa seeds.
