Uranium ore samples (439-514 ppm U) were leached in acidic ferric sulfate solutions for 24 h, followed with the bacterial oxidation of the leach liquors and a second leach cycle. Iron species, based on the methods of their determinaiton, were nanalyzed before and after the leaching. Total dissoloved ferrous iron (Fe_t^<2+>) and the hydroxycomplex of ferric iron (FeOH<2+>) were used as relative measures of the redox reactions resulting from the contact of ore material with ferric sulfate and from the bacterial oxidation of iron. Two of the three ore samples tested reduced ferric iron far in excess of what could be attributed to the oxidative dissolution of U(IV).
