A lignocellulolytic fungus, Coriolus hirsutus, has been isolated from sporophores growing on oak wood and studies on its lignin degrading ability have been carried out. It degraded 49.6% of sulfuric acid lignin in the presence of glucose as a readily utilizable carbon source. Solid-state fermentation of agro-residues by the white rot fungus resulted in 16.6% degradation of rice straw lignin and 19.0% degradation of wheat straw lignin in 25 days.
