Cellulosic wastes, bagasse and sawdust, were treated with acidified solvents such as chloroform, dioxane, ethanol, ethyl acetate, dimethyl sulfoxide, and dimethyl formamide for periods up to 36 h. The terated materials were delignified, dried, and used as inducing carbon sources in fermentation media for trichoderma reesei. Pure cellulose powder and untreated materials were used in control media. The fermentaiton media containing bagasse treated for 8 h in chloroform or dioxane had promising cellulase activity while the unterated bagasse had very low enzyme activity. Media with terated sawdust produced a relatively higher enzyme activity than that with untreated material. The sawdust was mildly afected by the mentioned solvents because of its high content of admixtures binding the cellulose.
