Studies of both batch and continuous sltures of zymomonas mobilis were carried out in order to assess the susceptibillity of an ethanol fermentaiton to contamination by such bacteria as Lactobacillus spp. In batch culture significant decrease in both cell growth and ethanol producton occurred when a 1-10% v/v inoculum of contaminant was added initially. Addition of low concentrations of benzyl penicillin (e.g. 10 mg/l) were efffective in contamination control in batch cultuer. In continuous culture at ethanol concentrations of 60-65 g/l and conditions of glucose limitation, contaminant addition caused only a temporary disturbance in the process, and steady state conditions were regained within 5-6 generations.
