Homogenized cladodes of the cactus Opuntia cacti (ficus-indica) maintained in closed vials at atmospheric pressure, spontaneously emit a gas that is 17% hydrogen. This early gas emission produced in only a few hours of incubation is enhanced by the addition of an small amount (1% v/v) of digested sludge, and attains its maximum at pH 6 and at 35℃-40℃. On the other hand, after days of incubation with digested sludge a different larger gas production was induced (≈500 ml/g, dry weight) containing 60% methane and very little hydrogen. After about 26 days of incubation the biomass was reduced to 10% of the original weight. In both processes higher yields of gas production were obtained by the incubation of the pith fraction of the cladodes.
