Seventeen strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were screened for the maximum number of fermentation cycles, rate and efficiency using a cell recycling technique. Strains HSR, Rl, G, Sc6 and JIL were found to be capable of undergoing 6,8,8,9 and 10cycles, respectively. A net saving of 30.5% in fermentation time was observed in Sc6 followed by 23.3% in JIL, 18.75% in Rl, 17.5% in G and 13.3% in HSR in comparison to batch-type fermentation with a simultaneous increase in alcohol production by 48.98,25.46,20.4,18.94 and 10.82 percent, respectively, without affecting the fermentation efficiency.
