Four thermotolerant yeasts growing on methanol as a sole carbon and energy source were isolated. One of them, Hansenula polymorpha CBM 11 showed interesting properties for S.C.P. production. The main advantages of the new strain are : high growth rate (0.215h^<-1>), high cell yield (0.41 g・g^<-1>, growth at low pH (below 3.5) allowing non-aseptic culture, and high affinity for methanol (K_s=71mg・l^<-1>). However, the cell yield decreased at a high concentratoin of methanol.
