A double layer agar plate containing guaiacol and acid swollen cellulose was used in simultaneous screening of soil samples for fungi with cellulase and/or laccase activity. By using this plate, 18 strains of the genus Trichoderma having laccase activity were isolated. These 18 strains were cultured in liquid medium with kraft lignin as the sole carbon source and exhibited a range of lignolytic activities as measured by the chlorine consumption method (Ander, P., Eriksson, K.-E. : Arch. Microbiol., 109,1,1976). The effect of adding acid swollen cellulose as a co-carbon source with lignin varied from isolate to isolate. For some, the apparent lignolytic activity decreased, for some it increased and for others it was unaffected.
