The purpose of this work was to develop a method for treating high-strength wastewater effectively in a smaller scale plant and for decreasing BOD to below the acceptable limit (300 mg/l) for sewage works in Osaka city at a practically low cost. As high-strength wastewater, we selected wastewater generated by the dewatering process for a slurried-mixture of crushed-refuse and sewage sludge. We investigated the effect of direct addition of a ferric chloride solution to an aeration tank of activated sludge (combined chemical-biological treatment) compared with the conventional activated sludge treatment. The optimum pH in the aeration tank for the combined chemical-biological treatment was 5-6. Under this pH, the limitation of BOD-MLVSS (Mixed Liquor Volatile Suspended Solids) loading to obtain an effluent BOD value below 300 mg/l was increased from 1 kgBOD/kgMLVSS/day for the conventional activated sludge treatment to 4 kgBOD/kgMLVSS/day. The calculated values of BOD removal coefficient (K_r), biomass growth coefficient (Y), and biomass-decay coefficient (K_d) for the combined chemical-biological treatment were 5.7×10^<-4> (1/hMLVSSmg/l), 0.41 (gMLVSS/gBOD), and 0.38 (1/day), respectively, and for the conventional activated sludge treatment they were 3.0×10^<-4> (1/hMLVSSmg/l), 0.59(gMLVSS/gBOD), and 0.06(1/day), respectively.
