EX-FERM Ethanol Production Using Peeled Ground Sugarcane in Packed Bed Fermentors

The preration of vertical packed bed fermentors for ethanol production by an EX-FERM technique with two 12-h cycles is described. Twelve Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains were tested, and previusly dried and stored peeled, ground sugarcane particles were the substrate. All the strains gave acceptable values for sugar consumption, in some cases above 97%, and ethanol yield coefficients for both EX-FERM cycles. The mean specific initial rate of ethanol production for the strains was 0.63 g/g・h. The mean values for the average volumetric rate of ethanol production in g/l・h were 1.5 and 0.9 for the first and second EX-FERM cycles. These low values are due to the low yeast biomass values employed, about 4 g/l, and to the high initial ratio of water dry solids in the experimental set up. Rapid hydrolysis of sucrose into its components has been demonstrated during the EX-FERM concurrent extraction and fermentation. Most of the yeast ends up trapped in the solid matrix at the end of each cycle, and extraction of total sugars from the cane is practically complete. The results support the validity of the peration of packed bed fermentors operated in cycles for the EX-FERM technique.
