A cellulolytic bacterium Cellulomonas flavigena KIST 321 was grown on a waste paper containing medium in batch and continuous culture experiments. The waste paper was obtained from domestic refuse by dry separation and contained 74% utilisable carbohydrate. The μ_<max> of the organism was 0.1 hr^<-1> grown in batch culture. The maximum steady state cell concentration in continuous culture was 3.7 g・l^<-1> at a dilution rate of 0.06 hr^<-1>. The maximum volumetric productivity was 0.26 g・l^<-1> using a medium containing 14 g・l^<-1> of waste paper. A method was developed for collecting the cell crop by flocculation.
