Streptomyces fradiae was grown in batch culture on a defined medium. With this medium a growth associated kinetic pattern for the production of the macrolide antibiotic tylosin was obtained. The fermentation was characterized by high initial values of the specific production rate (q) of 1.9 mg tylosin synthesised/g dry wt/hr which decreased rapidly after 48 hr. Fed-batch fermentations were carried out with a linear feed of complete medium starting at 48 hr. The total tylosin synthesised was increased markedly in the fed-batch fermentations over that observed in the control, although the values of q observed were similar.
