The growth inhibition of wild type Saccharomyces cerevisiae X1280 by S-(2-aminoethyl)-L-cyteine (thialysine) was completely reversed by L-lysine and partially reversed by DL-α-aminoadipic acid. Thialysine-resistant mutant AEC45-12 excreted lysine into the culture supernatant following 4 days of growth with a concomitant decrease of lysine in the intracellular pool. Variation of initial pH, and the supplementation of growth medium with α-ketoadipic and α-aminoadipic acids influenced its production, urea enhanced its excretion but thialysine and yeast extract had no effect.
