The microbiological oxidation of analytically pure heavy metal sulfides has been investigated with a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The applicability of an adapted Monod equation in the kinetic description of the metabolic oxidation of metal sulfides has been demonstrated. In this process the rate of metal dissolution was found to be directly proportional to the initial surface area of the substrates. The most important finding of this work is the relationship between the rate of metal sulfides oxidation and their solubility product. The highest rate was obtained with the substrate having the highest solubility product and the following order of the rate of metal dissolution was estabilished for the substrates studies : NiS>Co>ZnS>CdS>CuS>Cu_2S. It has been suggested that the first step in the metal sulfide oxidation is the dissociation of the substrates.
