A model mixed culture system was investigated to obtain information on a bulking phenomenon in waste treatment by the activated studge method from the view point ok kinetic study of population balance. A continuous mixed culture was carried out employing two bacteria, a strain of Flavobacterium breve, strain F-39,as a representative of floc-forming organisms, and the competitor, a strain of Flavobacterium ferrugineum, strain B-21,having a poor setteability, as a model organism from bulking sludge. A mixed culture of the bacteria simulated induction of a bulking phenomenon when loading of waste liquor was increased by raising the feed rate of artificial sewage. A mathematical representation of the system was developed based on the kinetic studies on degradation of starch supplied as a limiting substrate, the growth of the bacteria on glucose liberated from the starch, and an interaction of the organisms. Mutualistic coexistence of the two oganisms was well predicted according to the complementary supply of glucose for F. breve strain F-39 by F. ferrugineum strain B-21,and excretion of an inhibitory substance against F. ferrugineum strain B-21 by the competitor, F.breve strain F-39. The mathematical model could closely simulate the drastic changes in the populations of the organisms.
