Power requirement and gas holdup were measured under operating conditions under which gas entrainment occurred from the free liquid surface of an aerated stirred tank, and the effect of the entrained gas on these characteristics was studied. The relationships between these characteristics and the flow rate of gas sparged from the bottom of the tank were found to depend on the rotational speed of the impeller. This phenomenon was caused by the entrained gas. The experimental results were correlated in dimensionless forms by using an overall gas flow rate which was the sum of the flow rates of sparged and entrained gas.
