• Most usual methods to implement string manipulation systems are based upon developing a high level language for string manipulations and implementing it on some actual machine. On the other hand, there is another approach in which a string manipulation system is organized on a virtual computer designed for that purpose. Basing upon the latter point of view, we have designed a virtual computer VC/S possessing basic operations on strings. We have examined its characteristics by implementing the interpreter of SNOBOL 3 on it and confirmed that VC/S is useful for string manipulations.
