A super-spherical solid Immersion lens (SIL) combined with magnetic field modulation (MFM) is developed in order to achieve high magneto-optical recording density. An improvement of the spatial resolution is obtained by this technique in comparison with SIL with LIM only. Marks of 0.15 and 0.2μm in size are recorded and read, leading to a recording density of 25 Gbits/in^2. The result is obtained with a disk velocity of 4 m/s which is related to data transfer rate. This study demonstrates the feasibility and capability to achieve high recording density using the combined SIL-MFM technique. An increase of the effective numerical aperture up to 1.7 is then possible.
