Phomopsis is a large genus of plant-inhabiting Coelomycetes fungi and distributed worldwide. In Japan, 22 diseases of fruit trees caused by Phomopsis have been reported. In spite of the economic importance of Phomopsis diseases, the classification system of Phomopsis species has not been established yet. Delimitation of Phomopsis species is also needed for correlation with their Diaporthe teleomorphs. In this study, I investigated the conidial morphology, cultural characteristics, pathogenicity, molecular phylogeny, and mating reaction of Phomopsis isolates, especially small-spored species from fruit trees, to clarify the identity.
