Fusaric acid (5-butylpicolinic acid) was found to be a potent inhibitor of dopamine β-hydroxylase in vitro and in vivo. The depression of the levels of endogenous norepinephrine was demonstrated in brain, heart, spleen and adrenal glands of the rat. This compound showed a consistent hypotensive effect in experimental animals, also. This study was conducted to prove the hypotensive activity of this compound in humans, for the purpose of testing whether or not this compound could be a unique antihypertensive drug in clinical medicine.
