The author studied the phenomenon of the transient elevation of blood pressure immediately following the cessation of a forced expiration in manners of Valsalva maneuver. Within one and the same individual the observed magnitude of Valsalva pressor response was proportional to the pressure of forced expiration, but this relation did not hold when results in different subjects were compared. There were suggestive indications that the Valsalva pressor response was modified in certain individuals by the existence of functional alterations in the autonomic nervous system, possibly such as those caused by the subclinical adhesive arachnoiditis cerebrospinalis.
