Potassium ion in the cardiac muscle cell was observed histochemically as the precipitate of potassium cobaltinitrite. It was decreased by the administration of the therapeutic dose of ouabain. Sodium ion was observed as the precipitate of sodium antimonate. It was also decreased by ouabain. Since these techniques have not been utilized yet in this field, this paper presents new data on the change of the electrolyte metabolism and discusses about the positive inotropic effect of ouabain.
