The lipolytic activity, the anticoagulant activity and the toxicity of various sulfated polysaccharides were studied. From this study it was recognized that the lipolytic activity of sulfated polysaccharides was not parallel with the anticoagulant activity, and although the anticoagulant activity and toxic effects of these sulfated polysaccharides were less than those of heparin, the lipolytic activity was marked. The clinical use of these sulfated polysaccharides for the treatment of the disturbance in the lipid metabolism was suggested by these observations The preparation of low molecular weight and low S-content of dextran sulphate was used for this purpose. When this preparation was injected into human body, the lipolytic activity was induced markedly in the blood without the noticeable anticoagulant effect and this lipolytic activity lasted longer than that of heparin.
