The significance of the length and variability of the coupling interval is studied on 353 cases with ventricular extrasystole. In normal subjects, the degree of variability of the coupling interval has some relationship with the configuration of ventricular complex. Extrasystole with the type resembling right bundle branch block pattern mostly shows major variability and is frequently seen in parasystole. Extrasystole with the type resembling left bundle branch block pattern shows minor variability, and it is discussed from the mode of variation of the coupling intervals that the super-normal phase may be a contributing factor for the genesis of extrasystole with this type. In the cases of hypertension and/or coronary sclerosis, the mean coupling interval is longer than in normal subjects.
