Teachers of English as a foreign or second language (EFL/ESL) often experience having to explain to a student the intricacies of the English article system. The English article system is deceptively simple: small words with loads of meaning and labyrinths of usage rules. In order to better understand this grammar topic, the following article presents a discussion summarizing the common usage rules of both definite and indefinite articles, identifies difficulties many ESL/EFL students have when trying to master the English article system, and finally, offers evidence that teaching the article system to students using both deductive and inductive techniques can improve their understanding of this complex element of the English grammar.
