When the modern schooling system was established in the early Meiji Era, homemaking education, mainly sewing, was also adopted into the schooling contents for the girls under the infulence of the advanced European countries and the United States in the aspects of its systems and teaching methods. But in the aspect of substance it was still based largely on private educational facilities and hardly differed from family life education. The percentage of the girls' attendance to school was very much low. For the purpose of enlarging the girls' education there occured the need to modernize its methods and contents. For this the foreign homemaking education systems were taken into ours as the model. Considering the homemaking education of those days it can be supposed that ours began to step forward to the modernization basing on the traditional education and adopting the foreign education systems and methods.
