In elementary schools, homemaking education is in an unfavorable situation as school administrators and teachers lack adequate understanding of the subject and it costs a great deal for equipment and materials. The aim of this survey, which was carried out in 1966, is to find out the details, with a stratified sample of 32 elementary schools. The sampling fraction was about 1/10. The results are as follows. (A) As to the teaching of homemaking, (1) 22 schools out of 32, had no special rooms for homemaking, (2) equipment was reported to be insufficient by teachers in 18 schools, and (3) prescribed school hours of 70 in a year was not maintained in 19 schools. (B) As to homemaking rooms and their equipment, (1) in many cases cooking was taught in the science laboratories and clothing in the conference rooms, and (2) the number of furnitures, fixtures and implements in existence was only 31% of standard necessities at schools in Kyoto City and 58% in other districts. (C) As to school finance, allotment of money to each subject was made by the principals at half of the schools, and in many cases pro rata. This study reveals that the financial situation of homemaking education is influenced by the understanding of administrators and the earnestness of teachers over the subject.
