We have invented so colled "Vacuum fixing bed" (or magic bed) for the purpose of immediate immobilizations of various fracture cases, particularly of vertebrae, pelvic girdles and extremities. In addition, it is also ulilized to immobilize the wryneck patient in the desired position after tenotomy. This bed is a hollow bag made of a special synthetic rubber material which is filled with multiple fine plastic beads. This is measured 85 cm in length × 65 cm in width × 5 cm in thickness and weighted approximately 6 kg. By evacuating the air out of the hollow bag with a suction machine, fine plastic beads inside the bag stuck sack and become rigid as a wooden plank. This rigidity is as long as a vacuum state is maintained. Studying the curvature of the spine and local pressure applied on the back of person when he lies on supine position, it was found that the curvature was maintained in physiological position and the pressure was aplied in the similar fashion to that in the bed made of plaster of paris. Because of the above findings, and its quick handy application of the bed, we have utilized this bed on 15 cases. 7 cases among the 15 showed much better results than that of the plaster of paris bed and the remaining 8 cases revealed similar results to that of the plaster of paris bed. Finaly, we believe this vacuum fixing bed is highly useful when applied clinically.
